During Rain Storm
Approximately 350 acres of hillsides burned during a lightning storm in the summer of 2009, located 5 miles east of highway 15 on CA-76. This 500 acre drainage area, with a 25 degree total steepness, ultimately lost over 70% of its vegetation as a result of the fire.
On Monday, January 18th, this area received its first significant rainfall causing massive amounts of sediment and debris to travel down the canyon and onto the highway. The 24 inch culvert located on the shoulder of 76 was not adequate enough to properly capture the debris of the 500 acres. Caltrans closed highway 76 and quickly worked for 3 hours as they removed the debris from the highway.
The next day as storm two of five approached, Whitson CM worked with SDG&E to obtain emergency permits in order to implement temporary sediment and drainage control BMPs. Whitson CM used the natural zones of deposition, within the canyon, to their advantage and successfully captured all the sediment and debris before it drained onto highway 76. After Whitson CM stepped in, they were able to capture 60,000 cubic feet of sediment and debris resulting from 4-inches of rainfall. Whitson CM will continue to work with SDG&E and Caltrans to implement a permanent solution.
This is one of many examples in which Whitson CM effectively adapts to any given situation with realistic and successful solutions!
